A century of whaling may have released more than 100 million tonnes - or a large forest's worth - of carbon into the atmosphere, scientists say.

Industry bids on 48,000 acres in Beaufort Sea lease sale, drawing criticism from Native Alaska and environmental groups, which said development would threaten whales, seals, birds, polar bears and people who rely on a subsistence lifestyle.
